Introduction

This programme emphasises the application of modern, sustainable, and energy-efficient engineering systems in the context of the built environment.  It is also characterised by parallel themes of design and management of project work, complemented throughout by the drive towards sustainability and energy efficiency of engineering solutions.

Programme Features

Teaching & learning methods
This programme is as multi-disciplinary as the professional world. Your project work is steered towards sustainable and energy-efficient engineering solutions and it helps you to facilitate dialogue with management teams.

Learning support
An additional 30-hour software training will be provided to assist students with their dissertation.

Employable graduates
A significant portion of our graduates has progressed to work in related fields of building services engineering in government departments in positions such as Work Supervisor and Technical Officer.

Further studies
Our graduates have admitted to MSc(Eng)/HKU.

Modules

Systems Design

The learning aims of this module are to develop your independent, critical and analytical abilities through the medium of services systems design. Extend problem solving abilities with regard to building services systems, network analysis and to develop a case study approach to the evaluation of building services design.

Plant and Maintenance

The module will develop your understanding and application of knowledge of building services plant to allow you to critically evaluate and predict plant and systems performance by the use of analytical and numerical techniques. You'll also learn about various methods of maintenance and management of building services within the context of regulatory framework and be able to appreciate the use of computer-based systems of maintenance including open systems.

Design Project 3 (CEF Module)

(CEF code: 36Z121400)

The engineering design project is intended to provide you with the opportunity to extend your existing knowledge and demonstrate engineering project skills both as team members and as an individual. This module will enable you to develop your critical thinking, problem solving and key skills in application to a case study example using appropriate tools of analysis and communication.

Intelligent Buildings (CEF Module)

(CEF code: 36Z121419)

This module has the following learning aims: To provide the underlying concepts of intelligent buildings, the working principles of hands-on experience on building automation systems, office automation systems, and communication systems. To provide knowledge of the construction and installation of the structured cabling systems enabling integrated system connections.

Alternative Energy Technology (CEF Module)

(CEF code: 36Z121397)

This module introduces various emerging renewable energy technologies which are likely to mitigate the damaging effect of current energy technologies on the climate.

Engineering Dissertation

The nature of the dissertation is to present you with a challenge, the solution of which is not readily available, and it will therefore involve you in original work. On an individual basis, you'll be required to carry out an in-depth investigation involving theoretical, experimental or investigative analysis or a combination of these.

This course has been included in the list of reimbursable courses under Continuing Education Fund. The mother course (BEng (Hons) Building Services and Sustainable Engineering) of this module is recognised under the Qualifications Framework (QF Level 5).

Assessment

Coursework, unseen examination, project work and dissertation.

An additional 30-hour software training will be provided to assist students with their dissertation.

Career Prospects/ Further Studies/ Campus Life

Career Prospects

Graduates can go on to establish professional careers in consultancy, design, contracting, project management and maintenance in organisations such as government technical departments and institutions where building energy management is a major concern.

"I like the module “Alternative Energy Technology” the most as it helped us to learn more about the application of renewable energy in HK, such as PV panel, biomass, wind turbine and tides. I was able to use different simulation softwares to compare the simulation data and choose the most reliable results, which are essential skills at the workplace."

Jason Yam
