Modules

Essentials and Applications of Artificial Intelligence (core)

This module aims to provide an in-depth understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) fundamentals, including its history, techniques, and modern applications. This module is an excellent opportunity for students from diverse academic backgrounds to explore this fascinating field. Throughout the module, students will gain hands-on experience in implementing AI solutions using popular programming languages and frameworks while also fostering critical thinking and ethical considerations in the development and application of AI technologies. The module also addresses important ethical, social, and governance aspects of AI, encouraging students to consider the broader implications of AI technology.

Data Science and AI Individual Project (core)

This module emphasises practical technical work within a research-informed framework that also takes account of human factors, ethical practice and professional values. Students will apply the technical, practical and analytical skills and knowledge acquired across the programme to build a solution for solving practical real-life problems, under the guidance and supervision of an individual supervisor.

Professional and Academic Skills (core)

This module is designed to provide students with a comprehensive set of skills necessary for success in both professional and academic environments. By providing a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between people, organizations, information systems, and technology, as well as developing practical skills in communication, teamwork, writing, and research, this module prepares students to effectively navigate the challenges and opportunities they will encounter in their future careers and academic pursuits.

Big Data Analytics (elective*)

This module provides students insight into concepts, theories and practical skills associated with data analytics and big data. The module is focused on developing students' proficiency in handling large-scale datasets, fostering critical thinking and creativity in designing analytics solutions, and enhancing collaboration and communication skills through group projects and presentations.

Advanced Machine Learning (elective*)

In this module, students will explore knowledge and practical skills in advanced machine learning. We will learn about the architecture and applications of various deep learning models, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), and Transformers. We will also cover reinforcement learning, natural language processing (NLP), and generative AI models, all these being the building blocks of the latest technological advancement in AI, including Large Language Models (LLM). A focus on explainability, fairness in AI, and recent advancements will be included to ensure a comprehensive understanding of contemporary challenges and innovations in the field

Data Visualisation and Communication in Practice (elective*)

This module focuses on the theory and practice of data visualisation and visual communication, emphasising both technical implementation and effective communication of complex data. Students will learn principles of visual perception, design fundamentals, and interactive visualisation techniques while developing practical skills in creating compelling data narratives for diverse audiences.

* You will study one elective module.  To allow students to gain a thorough understanding on the contents and learning outcomes of the elective modules, a briefing session will be provided at the beginning of the programme. The Programme Coordinator will assist students to choose a suitable elective module, taking into account their academic background, interests and career plan. Depending on the students' preference and enrolment number, selected elective(s) will be offered in each academic year.
